FAQS

Q: How is the Thermo Scientific NanoDrop 2000 different from the NanoDrop™ 1000?
A: The NanoDrop 2000 UV-Vis spectrophotometer is the next generation instrument of the NanoDrop 1000. It can do everything that the full-spectrum UV-Vis NanoDrop 1000 spectrophotometer does, plus more, including: faster measurements (< 5 secs), smaller sample size (0.5 µl for higher concentration samples), broader concentration dynamic range (up to 15,000 ng/µl dsDNA), lower wavelength capability (e.g. 205 nm), and enhanced software that allows for custom methods.

Q: What is the difference between the NanoDrop 2000 and the NanoDrop 2000c?
A: Both models have the micro-volume pedestal capabilities described above. In addition, the NanoDrop 2000c has a built-in cuvette capability which allows for all the same pedestal applications plus kinetics (time and time/temp) applications.

Q: What are some of the pre-configured applications?
A: Nucleic acid, MicroArray, Protein A280, Proteins & Labels, Colorimetric protein methods (BCA, Bradford, Lowry, Pierce 660 nm), UV-Vis and Cell Cultures.  Same as the NanoDrop 1000 with the addition of custom methods capabilities.

Q: Is there an ability to create and save custom methods?
A: Yes. Methods can be built (with or without standard curves), with customized analysis wavelengths, factors, extinction coefficients and more.

Q: Can kinetics be performed with these instruments?
A: No, kinetics can be performed on the NanoDrop 2000c model using the cuvette capability. The kinetics application allows for time-based measurements as well as temperature control (37 °C).

Q: What sort of accuracy should I expect with the NanoDrop 2000/2000c?
A: Typically within 2%.

Q: What sort of reproducibility should I expect with the NanoDrop 2000/2000c?
A: Typically ± 2 ng/µl for dsDNA samples <= 100 ng/µl and ± 2% for samples > 100 ng/µl.

Q: Do nucleic acids require purification prior to measurement on the NanoDrop 1000?
A:  Yes, absorbance measurements are not specific for a particular nucleic acid and will be affected by the presence of nucleotides and other molecules which absorb at 260 nm.

Q: Do proteins require purification prior to measurement on the NanoDrop 1000?
A: Yes, when using the Protein A280 module since absorbance measurements will be affected by the presence of non-protein molecules which absorb at 280 nm. For non-purified proteins there are other pre-configured modules (BCA, Bradford, Lowry, Pierce 660 nm) that may be used.

Q: Is simply wiping the pedestal surfaces enough to prevent carryover?
A: Yes. The highly polished quartz and stainless steel surfaces of the sample retention system are resistant to sample adherence, making the use of dry lab wipes very effective in removing the sample.

Q: Can I check whether my instrument is calibrated and running accurately?
A: Yes. We recommend performing a Calibration Check using CF-1 calibration check fluid every 6 months. CF-1 is available from NanoDrop Products or an authorized distributor.

Q: Does the NanoDrop 2000/2000c require a computer to operate?
A: Yes, these instruments connect via USB to any PC-compatible computer running Windows 7, Windows XP or Vista.

Q: What warranties* are available?
A: A one year warranty is included with the purchase of an instrument. In addition 1-3 year extended service plans are available. Each service plan includes parts, labor and Priority Overnight shipment to and from our service facility. All service plans include one preventative maintenance service per year. (*Applies to US/Canada only. All others please contact your local sales channel for country specific warranty and service options.)
